Happy New Year

I'm hoping this will be a better year for posting than last year was. I went through quite a bit last year and I'm hoping this year is easier for me!

As many of you know, I was trying to having gastric bypass surgery. Well, after jumping through all the hoops that my insurance company demanded, my surgeon sent off to have the surgery approved. It came back denied, not the surgery, but the hospital! So, I had to find out which hospitals were approved. The closest ones were about 2 hours away. So I started the process again with a new surgeon.

This was a "God Thing" since my new surgeon (the first time she saw me) found something strange going on in my neck. After quite a few test, it was found that I had thyroid cancer. She told me then, that if I had to have cancer, thyroid cancer was the best one to have. Well, I can tell you "best" "have" and "cancer" do not go well together in a sentence.

She sent me to an endocrinologist, and he did a biopsy on it, and then scheduled me for surgery. I had surgery to have my thyroid removed on August 16. The surgery was late starting (by at least 4 hours) and I didn't get to my room until 8:30 that night. I went home the next day. I had a tough time sleeping because I felt "pulling" in my neck, so I slept in the rocking chair for about a week.

My follow up visit was in the middle of September and I went back and was given the schedule for the Radioactive Iodine treatment. It would be the middle of October. I also had an appointment with my gastric bypass surgeon the same week. When he found out what was going on, he rushed my surgery date (He didn't want his team exposed to the radiation.) Oh yeah, my surgeon who found the cancer, moved to NY, so I had to get another surgeon!

My gastric bypass surgery was on October 3rd. My mom and I went to Durham on the 2nd and she stayed in a hotel while I was in the hospital. My surgeon was great! And I must admit, that Durham Regional Hospital has a wonderful staff! I was impressed with all of them, from the ASU, OR, and nursing floor! And since I work at a hospital and also just had surgery in another hospital, I feel like I know what I'm talking about!

Anyway, I went home after 2 nights in the hospital, and didn't have any problems. Unless you count being on a liquid diet a problem - which I do! Since the surgeon put me on a liquid diet for a little over 2 weeks before the surgery and then I was on it again for a little over 3 weeks after the surgery, I wanted to eat some real food something fierce!

This surgery was easier when I got home, no pain meds were needed, I was able to sleep without any problems. And while I was out for this surgery, I had the Radioactive Iodine treatment during the last week, so I didn't have to miss any extra work for it.

For those of you who do not know what Radioactive Iodine treatment is, here is what I went through. I went in on Monday to Nuclear Medicine department of the hospital. There they did a scan on my neck and knee while sitting in a chair. I know really weird on the knee. Then they laid me on a table and strapped my arm down and did a scan on my whole body. That was it. I had to go back on Tuesday and they did another scan on my whole body. On Wednesday is when they did one more body scan and then I was given the Radioactive pill to swallow. It was brought to me in a metal container and the man giving it to me walked out of the room so I could take it. I was then promptly escorted from the hospital to go home and stay away from everyone for three days. I couldn't sleep with my husband, and I couldn't cook for him. Little did they know that when I started the liquid diet 5 weeks ago, I stopped cooking for him! =) The the following Monday, I had to go back for one more body scan!

I had to flush 3 times after every bathroom use, throw my toothbrush away after the three days of quarantine. And the wash all my linen and clothes separately. So the grandkids stayed away until Saturday night and then they were ok to come over. I didn't let them crawl up in bed with me that night, but at least they were there.

Anyway, it has been 3 months since my surgery (or at least tomorrow it will be) and I've lost 55 pounds. I'm very proud of this and hope it continues. I go back to Durham on Thursday for my 3 month follow up and also for the group session. I'm also documenting this in a scrapbook, so hopefully I'll some pages up soon.

If you read all of this, I'm impressed. Hope I didn't bore you too much!

Alabama Egg Nog

We always seem to loose this recipe when it's time to make it, so I thought I would post it here so I'll always know where it is. We make it every New Years Eve and it is wonderful. We leave the bourbon and rum out, and replace it will milk.

8 Eggs, separated
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 pint bourbon (Wild Turkey)
5 cup Whipping cream, Whipped (2 1/2 cups before whipped)
2 cups Milk
2 ounces rum
Ground nutmeg

Combine egg yokes and sugar; beat until smooth.
Add bourbon very slowly beating constantly.

Add 1 cup whipped cream to egg yolk mixture and beat until smooth.
Add milk beating well.
Add remaining whipped cream and beat until smooth; stir in rum.

Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

Chill thoroughly. Sprinkle with nutmeg before serving.

Yield: About 14 cups.

Adriana's Cafe and AmyDane Designs got together for a great collaboration for a Valentines kit. It's called Sizzling Hot and they went with different colors than the normal red and white. I love the results they got. The colors are so rich! I love everything about both kits. Check out the previews, they are linked to the store.

Have you ever created a layout with a picture in mind, and then couldn't find the picture you wanted? Well that is what happened with this layout. I had a picture in mind that I was going to use on this layout when I created it. It was of my husband and I dancing at our wedding. It was a shot taken at our reception by my new brother-in-law of a close up shot. He said it would be the only close up and we would be glad to have it. He was so right! But, when I looked for the CD with the picture on it, I couldn't find it. We have been packing and storing stuff that I couldn't find it any where! So I came across another wedding picture of my nephew and his wife and thought it would work just as well. So here is the layout I did using this kit.

Designing Darlings Week 3 - Yummy Days

Well, I've made to it round 3 of the Designing Darlings Competition at Stuff to Scrap. This week, we were giving a picture and the story behind the picture and had to come up with a color palette and a theme. The picture was of peaches, and I noticed the sunshine coming through the leaves. Well, I came up with a color palette of peach, yellow and a few other colors and since peaches are sooooo good, I consider them Yummy! So my kit is called Yummy Days (and yes, I've been singing Glory Days in my head and saying Yummy Days instead!) Well, it's round two of Designing Darlings at Stuff to Scrap. I learned a lot this week, and most of it was what I was doing wrong. Hopefully my designs will only get better. This week, we couldn't use any CU items, unless we made them ourselves. So I had to go outside my comfort zone but I think it turned out pretty good.

Well, I'm in a contest again. Not sure how it will turn out, but I joined for the learning experience. It's not a layout contest this time, I'm learning to design. I've been doing some blog train designs, but really wanted to learn more so I thought I would join in the Designing Darling Contest at Stuff to Scrap.

We were giving a color scheme and we had to come up with a theme. It reminded me of summer colors, but with February just around the corner, I wanted something about love, thus the title, Summer Lovin'.

Here are a couple of layouts I did using this kit. The girls got scooters from Santa this year and today was their first day out riding them. They had so much fun. Xandra keeps looking at her feet, as if she is afraid to fall off! I also did this one for the font challenge this month at Stuff to Scrap.

Hey everyone. I've been having computer issues lately. It crashed! Don't you hate it when that happens? I remember a few years ago, I crashed three of them in 2 weeks time! Hey everyone, you've all see this before right, but with different designer names, dates and times....

Well, now it's your turn to design our next Speed Scrap template to be used for the entire 2011 year.

THE RULES:
Simply create any shape Speed Scrap template (square, rectangle, circle, etc.) that has room for the designers to add their Designer Name, along with the speed scrap Date and Time.

Make sure it includes the following words: Speed Scrap, Stuff To Scrap, 7 Instructions in 60 Minutes, and 1 Great or Fabulous Layout.

Template MUST be created with any current STS Designer's kit.

Once you have your Speed Scrap template created, upload it to your gallery, linking it to the designers gallery and then post it back here for us to all see.

The most important part, make sure you send over your template to stufftoscrap.com@gmail.com with SS Template Contest in the subject line.

The winner will be annouced at the end of December.

You may submit up to 3 templates. All templates are due by December 18th.

Some of you know that I have been fighting the battle of the budge for most of my life. I have decided this year to get some serious help. I'm planning on having gastric bypass surgery next month. I've been seeing my family doctor for six months and have been dieting trying to get ready for the surgery.

So when Adriana of Adriana's Cafe told us what her new was going to be, I was so excited. Her new kit is "I Will Lose" a weight loss kit. Well it didn't take long to get the one more follower (actually I got two more!) I usually make my templates from layouts that I've done, but this time I did something different. I was at a crop this past weekend and I started looking through a new Creative Memories catalog. (Have you seen one lately? They have changed quite a bit.) Anyway, I saw this layout that I loved, but didn't have time to srcaplift it. (I know I didn't get any pages done, so I'm not sure why I didn't have time, but....) So I decided to do a template so I could do the layout later and not have to worry about losing the piece of paper I drew it on! This time, not only do I have the psd file, I also added the pngs and a tiff file. I have learned that some applications do not use psd files, but they can use the rest.

Anyway, here is the template, hope you like it! The image is linked to the download. Oh, and what do you think of the colors for this?

Rainbow Bridge

In early September, Katina (aka The Scrappy Kat) lost her poodle, Pepe.

Pepe was a rescue dog, and Kat enjoyed his loyal, loving companionship for 15 years! Most of us can relate to losing a pet, and it is especially heartbreaking to lose one who has been a part of our family for such a long time. As we are not all in Kat's neighborhood to give her big hugs, the designers at STS have decided to give her a virtual hug, but creating a special kit called Rainbow Bridge (poem below) to honor not only the adorable, well-loved Pepe, but all the animals we love and lose in our lifetime. We have dogs, cats, horses; we even have lizards, bunnies, and many other kinds of pets in this kit! With a colorful rainbow palette and a ton of papers and elements showcasing all kinds of pets, this kit is perfect for ALL pet owners! Ok everyone, it's that time of the week again to place your votes. I'm in two different competitions, this is the last week for Brownie Scraps, and you have until midnight tonight to vote (although they haven't gotten the pole up as of yet). You can find the voting link here. You are looking for Week 4 Voting or Final Week Voting. Here is the layout I did for this challenge. I used the designer collaboration for September called Birthday Bash.

There's a new kit out today that is a collaboration between SAHM Scrapper and Rainamoon Scraps. It is a great kit called Dinosaur Roar. I love the colors of this kit and the cute dinosaurs.

Yes, it's that time again. I have two layouts up that need your vote. The first one is at theStudio. I did a layout called Drumming Queen. I used Ambowife Design's kit called Gone A Courtin'. You can vote for it here.

The other is at Brownie Scraps. We had to do a layout about a body part and also have a lot of white space. Here is my layout using Snuggleberry Pie Designs kit called From A to Z called Chubby Cheeks. You can vote for it here.

Cozy Covers

Becky from B2N2 Scraps has a kit called Cozy Covers that I love. It's inspired by quilts, and the texture on these paper is great. They can be used for kids with blankies, or bedtime, or just about any picture. Here is a preview, it's linked to her store.

Here are a couple of layouts I did using this kit. I really love the way they turned out. This is my nephew, he has some of the cutest expressions.

I want to thank you all for voting for me. I came in 5th place in the Studio for Isaiah and made it through on Brownie Scraps for You Talk Too Much (they don't show the results as far as place.) And this is my entry for this challenge. It's Xandra with tape over her mouth! No, I didn't do it (even though I may want to at time!) she did, but the pictures turned out cute anyway. I used Betty Days by Scrappin' Daisies. And the song is an old one called You Talk Too Much by Joe Jones.

Well, the Studio is now voting on our layouts we did for Week 1 of the Layout Artist Competition. We were all given the same kit to use, it's called Autumn's Kiss by Mistybelle Designs. Here is my layout. You have to register at the Studio to vote, but I would really appreciate it. The image is linked to the voting page.
